Bruce Nye, a Sacramento native, started his musical career at the age of 10 on the alto saxophone. Upon entering junior high school he moved on to play French horn, finally settling on the tuba in the eighth grade. While at Mitchell Junior High he studied with Sacramento Symphony Principal Tubist, Ken Cave. Bruce continued playing tuba at Cordova High School in addition to singing in the choir. After graduating in 1980 he attended American River College.
While at American River College, Bruce studied under Dr. Les Lehr and performed as principal tubist in a wide variety of musical groups including the ARC Symphonic, Concert and Pep Bands. He also played in the ARC Dixieland band which had the honor of performing at the Sacramento Dixieland Jubilee in 1981 and 82. During this period Bruce was the principal tuba in the American River College Orchestra under Walter Kerfoot and performed professionally in small chamber groups throughout the Sacramento area.
In addition to playing in the Sacramento Symphonic Winds Bruce currently is the substitute tubist for the Camellia Symphony Orchestra and plays with the Sacramento Brass Quintet. Bruce and his wife Carol are Carmichael residents and have two grown sons Marc and Paul.
