Sharon Gulliford,
began her interest in the flute at age 9 in the public school music program of Evergreen School District in San Jose, California.
In high school, she toured in a U.S. goodwill ambassador group to Europe.
Sharon's first private instructor, while she was studying at San Jose City College, was Darrell Johnston, clarinetist and
founder of the San Jose Wind Symphony. She subsequently studied with Barbara Larsen, principal flute with SJWS, and joined SJWS.
During this time Sharon won the Howard Hanson scholarship award and entered San Jose State University School of Music
as a music major to study with the phenomenal flutist and teacher, Isabelle Chapuis-Starr. While there, Sharon presented three flute
recitals, learned African and Brazilian drumming, and played principal flute in the Symphonic Band.
Following a 5-year hiatus from music and a move to Sacramento, Sharon discovered the Sacramento Symphonic Winds in the
San Juan Unified School District's adult education catalog. She has also played with the Sacramento Concert Band and currently plays
bass flute with the Camellia City Flute Choir. She is pursuing her flute studies locally with Edna Comerchero.
